The graphs below represents how lenient or strict the marijuana laws are in your state compared to Maine, Hawaii, and Connecticut.  This determination is based on level of enforcement, weight limits, fines and/or time imprisoned.  This determination is also based on how strict penalties are for repeat offenders and proximity to certain drug restricted areas such as school zones and public parks.

Misdemeanors

 


Unlawful possession of marijuana

A person who possesses 30 grams or less of marijuana.
Fine: Up to $500                                              Imprisonment: Up to 30 days


Note
: If you are arrested and charged with more than 30 grams of marijuana, the police may charge you with possession with intent to distribute.


Unlawful sale/distribution of marijuana (without monetary exchange)

A person who sells/distributes a small amount of marijuana without monetary exchange.
Fine: Up to $500                                              Imprisonment: Up to 30 days


Unlawful possession/sale of drug paraphernalia

It shall be unlawful for any person to sell, possess, or to possess with intent to sell, drug paraphernalia to manufacture, inject, ingest, inhale, or otherwise introduce into the human body any amount of marijuana.
Fine: Up to $2,500                                           Imprisonment: Up to 1 year

 

 
 
 

Felonies

 

Unlawful possession of marijuana
A person who possesses more than 30 grams of marijuana.
Fine: Up to $5,000                                           Imprisonment: Up to 1 year


Unlawful sale/distribution of marijuana

Any person who knowingly sells, manufactures, delivers or brings into this state less than 1 pound of marijuana and less than 10 plants.
Fine: Up to $2,500                                           Imprisonment: Up to 1 year


More than 1 pound, but less than 10 pounds and between 10 and 20 plants.
Fine: Up to $5,000                                           Imprisonment: Up to 1 year


More than 10 pounds, but less than 50 pounds and between 21 and 50 plants.
Fine: Up to $15,000                                         Imprisonment: Up to 3 years


More than 50 pounds, but less than 1,000 pounds and between 51 and 4,999 plants.
Fine: Up to $25,000                                         Imprisonment: Up to 3 years


More than 1,000 pounds and 5,000 plants or more.
Fine: Up to $100,000                                       Imprisonment: Up to 10 years


Note
: Second or subsequent offenses result in much harsher fines and/or penalties than noted for this state.  The sale or distribution to minors also results in much harsher penalties in this state.
